The Matthew Carefully song for AOA

Remember that contest where we asked for ideas for a Matthew Carefully song? Well, we ended up picking the suggestions from Arielle and Jackers.

Well this morning, Matthew's song -- based on Arielle and Jackers' ideas -- was waiting in our inbox. It's titled "Half-sleep."

It's embedded above. And you can download it here.

Lyrics are after the jump.

Thanks to Matthew for the song! And thanks to everyone who posted a suggestion!

Matthew's new album, Community Balloon, is now available. And here's recap (and photos) of his album release show at Caffe Lena.

Arielle suggested - "There's a bridge on Fuller road, and on both sides are the words "I love Nicki" written in spray paint. I've always wondered who Nicki was, and what it is about them that would cause another person to declare their love by defacing public property. I'd love to hear Matt's interpretation of the events behind this. It's weird and romantic all at the same time."

And Jackers suggested - "not sure how normal this experience is, but...Ever laying in bed in the morning, knowing you should get up and start your day. And you start imagining all the things you need to do to start your day, like "ok, I 'm going to get up, go over to the closet, pick out something to wear, like maybe my green shirt, then I got to brush my teeth, and get my bag, etc etc." But the thing is, since you're still laying in bed half awake it starts to morph into something like a lucid dream, were you actually think you are doing these things, and getting yourself almost ready to go. Then the inevitable happens, and you realize you're still and bed, haven't done a thing, and still need to do all the thing you thought you had already taken care of. It's usually a pretty big letdown at first, but then again it's like you've already had a dry run..."

So here are the lyrics I came up with based on the suggestions:

in my half-asleep
i am mulling over details of the way to start my day
and pulling on a clean shirt
filling up my bag
i think i'm ready to escape
i think i'm giving in to getting to it

and wishing to appear to you
in the least obvious of places
i am fixing to let you know
just how much you mean to me
and that i'm giving into you
what's enough that's fair to show?

something takes over between the bed and the lamp post
am i really up for this, my dear?
is my willingness to veer right?

maybe in front of me
it's my face that starts to bend when i begin to brush my teeth
looking for a real word
to describe my path
i think i'm ready to go paint
i think i'm giving in to getting to it

here's hoping this looks real to you
for you will see it on the way to work
and on your way back home
letters bigger than i thought they'd be
brighter than i need
is this enough for you to know?

something took over between the bed and the lamp post
was i really up for this, my dear?
did my willingness to fear us turn wrong?
something takes over between the bed and the lamp post
am i really up for this, my dear?
did my willingness to fear us turn wrong?

in my dream i took care of everything
care of everything
care of everything

My new favorite song!

I'm grinning from ear to ear right now! Love it! Bravo!

It's absolutely perfect. I love it!

wow. i was wondering how this would come together... and i have to admit i'm thoroughly impressed. great collaboration!

Thanks everyone!

I enjoyed making this piece!

I feel like I tried a few things I don't normally do (chromatic acoustic guitar line, weird blues-y vocal scoop) and still referenced the topics at hand. Good challenge!

Thanks to AOA for putting this on, and thanks to everyone who suggested ideas!

The blues-y vocal scoop is just what it needed!

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
