Albany County's budget director has said in a letter to other officials that the county could run out of cash before the end of this year. [TU]

The Saratoga Springs man convicted of stabbing his mom last year was sentenced 15 years in prison. The man has a history of mental illness and his mom said a better mental health care system might have helped prevent the incident. She said she would "never give up hope for him." The medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Zoe Sandercox, the Troy three-year-old prosecutors allege was killed by her mother's former boyfriend, testified yesterday that the girl's injuries were consistent with abuse. [Troy Record]

Attorneys for the two men originally charged with the 2002 murders of Arica Lynn Schneider and Samuel Holley in Troy say the case against their clients was built on unreliable witnesses who were looking to cut deals with prosecutors. Another man, Michael Mosley, was arrested Monday after prosecutors said his DNA matched a sample found at the crime scene. [TU]

A homeless man from Schenectady was sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for having sex with an underage teen from Connecticut. Prosecutors say the man had been living in a baseball dugout at SCCC and used a library computer to meet the teen. They say he stole a car in Schenectady, drove to Connecticut and brought her back. Two Troy city workers were reportedly suspended this week after they allegedly took a city vehicle to an "exotic sports bar" in Watervliet. [Troy Record]

Andrew Cuomo said yesterday that he's against the soda tax, raising taxes on cigarettes or borrowing to help bridge the budget gap. [Syracuse Post-Standard via State of Politics]

"Sources" tell the NY Post that state Senate majority conference leader John Sampson leaked confidential bidding info to AEG, the group that eventually won the contract for the now-stalled-again racino at Aqueduct. [NY Post]

A man wanted for murder in New Jersey was arrested outside his mom's apartment on Central Ave in Albany Wednesday night (map). [Union County (NJ) prosecutor's office] [TU]

A former insider with NXIVM, the secretive org that runs an "executive success" program out of Colonie, alleges in an affidavit that she's being harassed by prominent members of the org because she says she has investment documents that indicate the members been involved "in a myriad of activities that are questionable and, in some cases, potentially illegal." Ernest Paragallo, the horse breeder convicted of neglecting horses on his farm near Coxsackie, is out of jail pending the appeal of his case. Said Paragallo to Fox23 after being released: "I didn't knowingly mistreat anything." [TU] [Fox23]

Warren Redlich -- an attorney, Guilderland town board member and Libertarian gubernatorial candidate -- is trying to get a ruling that his law firm's website is misleading overturned. [TU]
