My Exit: Mary Spinelli

Mary Spinelli My Exit photo.jpgEvery Monday night our friends at WEXT do this thing called My Exit -- local listeners get to come into the station and program an hour of music. So we thought it'd be fun to find out a little bit about these people and why they picked the songs on their play list.

Here's tonight's person:

Who:
Mary Spinelli, originally from Miami, Florida but now I live in Albany. I'm Executive Director of the Lark Street Business Improvement District as well as a photographer and mixed media artist.

How would you describe your musical taste?
I love all genres of music but I'm not a big fan of country.  Mostly I listen to electronica and indie rock but I do still have a soft spot for older punk and Goth.

A few songs from Mary's show:
Haiti - Arcade Fire
I have been listening to this song over and over recently and am finding it impossible to tire of it.  It's musically simply with these beautiful lyrics that go back and forth from English to French and conjures imagery of a beautiful island and its people suffering.

Bring it on Home to Me - Sam Cooke.
Sam Cooke has the most incredible voice and this is one of my favorite songs of his.

Grand Canyon - The Magnetic Fields.
If I had to choose only one artist to listen to for the remainder of my life, Stephen Merritt would be it.  He is a musical genius and has the most haunting voice.  When I saw The Magnetic Fields perform at Maxwell's in New Jersey many years ago, they started to play this song more than twice and something wasn't working with the beginning of the track so Stephen said forget it and played the next song.  Wish I could have heard it live.

Pit Stop (Take Me Home) - Lovage.
Mike Patton is another one of my favorite artists and I can't get enough of what he does from Faith No More, to Mr. Bungle, to Peeping Tom.  I love the silliness of these lyrics and the combination of Patton's voice with Jennifer Charles'.

Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
One of my all time favorite songs.  Every time I hear it I want to dance.

You can hear Mary's My Exit show tonight at 8 on 97.7 or at exit977.org.

Here's how to schedule your own My Exit show on WEXT.

swoon :)

This could be my favorite MyExit list of all time, especially for the inclusion of Joy Division and Arcade Fire.

i heart lovage... and mary spinelli. aw.

Wow. I know radio is not about appearance, but she looks like a celebrity in that photo -- kind of Maggie Gyllenhaal-esque. Very pretty.
