My Exit: Ted Potrikus

album-cover-crowded-house-self-titled.jpgEvery Monday night our friends at WEXT do this thing called My Exit -- local listeners get to come into the station and program an hour of music. So we thought it'd be fun to find out a little bit about these people and why they picked the songs on their play list.

Here's tonight's person:

Who?
Ted Potrikus from Niskayuna. By day, a lobbyist for the retail industry in New York State and full-time dad. Mets fan, married 24 years to Angie. Recreational percussionist and avid music fiend who is prone to getting lost in mazes of blogs that introduce him to more new sounds but unfortunately give him no additional time to listen to said sounds.

How would you describe your musical taste?
As for music, I like it all. Favorites include Bob Dylan, NRBQ, Crowded House, XTC, the Beatles. Favorites subject to change at a moment's notice. The first album I owned was "A Groovy Kind of Love" by the Mindbenders (I still have it). The first 45 I owned was "Hang on Sloopy" by the McCoys (I still have it). Proud owner of a jukebox with stacks of 45s to keep it, and me, happy.

A few songs from Ted's My Exit show:
Crowded House - Saturday Sun
I included this new single from Crowded House because people need a reminder of how great a songwriter Neil Finn can be.

Dan Baird - Well Enough Alone
I put this near the top of the show because this, too, deserves to be heard. Dan Baird is so much more than "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" and is still louder than you are.

Rick Nelson - Garden Party
While this is an intensely personal and specific song for him, it offers a chorus with words of wisdom that serve all.

Dead Man's Shirt
- Michael Eck
Shifted - Rosanne Raneri
These two songs, from the "Local 518," were added to my playlist for a couple of reasons. The first is that they're just great songs -- and -- the second is that one of the things I like best about WEXT is that it puts our very active and wonderful local music scene on an appropriate par with the so-called 'national' acts that populate the airwaves. Good for WEXT, good for Michael and Rosanne and every other musician filling our ears right in our own backyards.

You can hear Ted's My Exit show tonight at 8 on 97.7 or at exit977.org.

Here's how to schedule your own My Exit show on WEXT.
