What's up in the Neighborhood

The NeighborhoodAmong the topics in this most recent spin around the Capital Region's online neighborhood: a sobering moment, a no-name coffee spot, Mr. Pio Pio, the Tour de Donut, the Wine and Food Festival, cool cars, the Adirondacks, the Wine 'N Diner, cuteness, scolding, a donut-making robot and table theft.

Silvia had a sobering moment at her son's school open house.

Dan (Nester -- he needs a Neighborhood name) go to the bottom of the no-longer Muddy Cup name situation.

Celina says Mr. Pio Pio is close to making her short list of Albany restaurants.

Daniel B is embarking on the Tour de Donut.

Bennett got up early to go up Hurricane Mountain.

Albany Jane went to the Wine and Food Festival at SPAC. Sebastien was also there and got a bunch of good car photos.

Jerry had a bad experience at the Wine 'N Diner.

Steve highlighted the fun kids menu at The Brown Derby.

Rebecca says she can't handle the cuteness at Make Me a Cake Next Door in Delmar.

Kevin ran the Dunkin' Run in Albany (you know, the former Bagel Run). And Jen ran the 10k.

Jackie went looking for treasures in "waste places."

One of Kristi's readers got scolded for eating from the bulk bin at the new Fresh Market.

Paula admired the cast iron facade of a spooky North Albany building.

CAPow lunched at Broadway Lunch in Schenectady.

The Exiles watched the cider donut robot at Riverview Orchards.

And you can steal Chuck's table for trivia at Brown's, but it will only strengthen his resolve.

Thanks for the link, guys!

Just to clarify, that was the second of two bad experiences at Wine-N-Diner, and to prove that I do speak positively about places that deserve it, I offer this article: http://derryx.com/?p=762

Thanks for the shout you guys!

Thank you for the link. I can't believe how popular -- and polarizing -- that post turned out to be.

After reading all the responses to the Fresh Market story it appears the consensus is that it is in fact okay to sample from the bins.

I was planning on making a run to Price Chopper after work to get some food for dinner... but now I think I'll just head to Fresh Market and go grazing.

We had lunch at Wine n Diner today. I wouldn't go back. We were the only customers there, the staff looked bored and were barely congenial. Our food sucked - I had the Thai dish (noodles and veggies in a curry flavor) and my companion had the Greek spinach dish that barely had any spinach in it. My veggies were long thin slices of carrot and zuchinni and yellow squash - tho the squashes were just strips of their skin really, no meat of the squash. For the prices they charge the food seemed really stingy on the main ingredients of the dishes! And the taste was bland. I felt like it was a waste of my time and money and there is nothing I hate more than paying for bad food!

xina, did you mention anything about your experience while you were there?

I've only been twice (which is a shame, because I can walk there), but both times I was very satisfied, and on my second trip the owner even came out and chatted with us, was genuinely interested in what we thought, and even added a little bonus whipped cream because someone who really likes whipped cream let it melt while he was taking photos of his dessert.

Anyway, what I'm saying is in my experience they're very accomodating and I'm sure if you spoke up they'd try to make you happy.

For what it's worth, I've had three excellent experiences at Wine 'n Diner. Each time was for dinner. The service was excellent and the food was great. Seems like there could be a problem with consistency.

It's a gem! Looking forward to my next visit.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
