All in one bin
Single-stream recycling -- where you just toss all the recyclable stuff in one bin -- has come to Troy. County Waste, the regional trash hauling company, has been transitioning to single-stream since the end of last year. (The one-bin-for-them-all approach has fans.) By the way, still not recyclable: pizza boxes.

How does one go about signing up? And will it cost me?

Single-stream is the waste management folks finally owning up that sorting recyclables was a passive-aggressive way to keep people from recycling. Let's hope it actually works. (My single-stream bin is much heavier than my garbage bin these days - partly, I suppose, because we compost a lot of the stuff which would weigh down the garbage bin.)

@Paul, if you live in Troy and have one of the blue recycling bins, then you are already signed up! If you need a bin, I think it is $30 a year, and you contact city hall. www.troyny.gov/recycling.html

I had no idea pizza boxes weren't recyclable! The bin says it takes flattened cardboard boxes. Isn't that the very definition of a pizza box?

Pizza boxes aren't recyclable if they have grease or food on them. The bottom of the box is always a mess but if the top of the box hasn't been contaminated by food then you can cut off the top and recycle it.
