How about them apples?
New York Mag recently had an interesting feature about unusual apple varieties grown in New York orchards -- varieties such as Ashmead's Kernel, Elstar and Calville Blanc d'hiver. They picked their favorites from a taste test at greenmarkets in the City -- and many of the tastiest (and unusual) apples came from Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook.

Awesome! Hopefully I can make it out there before all the apples have fallen off the trees.

I've been doing an informal survey of ciders this fall (the SO and I go through more than a gallon a week while it's in season!) and I have concluded that Samascott Orchards has the best cider in the area. Good balance between sweet and acidic, rich mouthfeel, and great complexity of flavor. I've been told that cider is all about the apple blend, so I'm not surprised to see they have some interesting apples! Besides the orchard, you can get their cider at the Co-op sometimes (they carry a couple of varieties, so it depends on what they have in) or the plaza farmers market on Wednesdays.
