ESP tree lighting photos 2010

ESP tree lighting 2010 Sebastien

Alas, the tree was not actually lit with fireworks.

The photo above is from Sebastien's photoset from last night's tree lighting and fireworks at the ESP. The set also includes the tree and a nice black and white shot.

This year's ESP tree is from Guilderland and is decorated with energy-efficient LED lights.

Hey thanks. Sorry the photos are not terribly exciting. Everybody is on the other side of the plaza by the way. For more colorful pics, head to the Times Union (photos by Luanne M. Ferris), or mikecny. Kim also made the tiniest fireworks video known to man.

Thanks to SEFCU, WTEN, NYS, and all of the other sponsors for making this event possible. The firworks were great, my kids loved them. Even my 4 year old who still hates the noise did not panic this year and really enjoyed the show.

That said, the delays at the even were unacceptable. The schedule had the tree lighting at 5:15 and the fireworks at 5:30. The tree was not lit until 5:55 or so, and the firworks went off at 6:00 or so. It was cold and windy. Really cold and windy. If you stood more than 20 feet from the stage, the speakers were not close to loud enough for anyone to hear what was on the stage. If you were close to the tree, there was eventually chants for them to light the tree. These chants weren't to be cute, they were from angry patrons that were cold. The speakers went on and on and on and on and on, and no one could hear them. The speakers seemed to think the chants were cute, but they were in anger.

Anyway, it was a great fireworks display. I love the event every year, but I do not know if I will attend with the family next year. If they want to make it so people can go, listen to the speakers, enjoy themselves they need to do just 2 things right:

1. LOUDER speaker system. It was rediculous that we stood in the cold for an hour or more standing there freezing without hearing a word - and we were fairly close to the stage!

2. Be at least close to on-time - especially in the cold. The natives were restless and had much more time gone by I suspect many more people would have left. (I saw many families leave)

Beautiful shots, as always! I wanted to go take some pictures, but it was too damn cold. And after reading Bill's comment above about the delays, I'm glad I didn't go. Brrrrrr!

What is Sebastien's secret for taking these great firework shots?

Bill is right. I was standing right next to the tree and couldn't hear a thing that was said on stage. The speeches or whatever the heck they were doing up there just went on and on and on and on...I kept looking and saying, "well, now another person is talking..." People were genuinely pissed off (hence the chanting) and I saw many people leave.

I don't want to sound ungrateful to the city or it's sponsors for putting on another nice, free event for us. Once things got underway it was quite nice. It's just that by the time things finally DID get underway, my toes were frozen and I was ready to get the hell out of there.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
