Matt Baumgartner opening English pub at Quackenbush square

The Biz Review's Pam Allen reports today that Bombers and Wolff's owner Matt Baumgartner is "finalizing details" to open an English-style pub at the Quackenbush House in Albany (the former Nicole's and Le Canard). Back in September, Steve had reported that Matt and the Mazzone group were both looking at the building. The Biz Review also reports that the rumored Troy Bombers franchise is also still a possibility. [Biz Review] [Tablehopping] [Troy Record] (Thanks, Summer!)

Matt is kicking some butt

I'm excited for this one. I know people have come down on certain aspects of Matt's establishments before (food, staff attitude, etc), but one can hardly deny that his joints are unique and fun. It'd be nice to have a good English Pub in Albany, so long as it's done right. The Quackenbush house is a great fit.

Love the Wolff's beer and ambiance, but loathe the food. Matt, if you're reading, execution is everything. Please be sure to find someone who can cook - damn, you're from Utica, you should know what good food is!!

@-R if it's going to be an authentic British pub, then I would expect the food to be bad!

In all seriousness, I'm excited Matt is opening a new place, but feel like the pub thing is overdone in this area. I would love to see Matt open a Belgium restaurant!

All of Matt's restaurants suck. The food is awful. Its like he's never eaten or met anyone who knows how to make good food. Also, the beer is waaaaay waaay overpriced at Wolffs. For a better deal, try Thatcher Street Pub behind the biergarten.

It funny to me how so many Albany bars are owned by a small group of people. MattB - Bombers, Wolffs, Bangers n Mash; Dejohn - Dejohns, Justins, Legends; Some dudes - Juniors, Cafe Madison, the Point. I know there's more I'm missing.

Not a criticism, just an observation.

Maybe Matt thought 'well if you're going to think my food sucks no matter what I might as well open an authentic British pub, then they would expect the food to be bad!' Shazzam, Bangers n Mash was born.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
