Capital Region classes

Classroom DeskBecause AOA doesn't want you to fail, we're offering a few ideas this week that might help you stick with your resolutions.

Yesterday it was local gym deals. Today: learning new things. The Capital Region has classes of all kinds: everything from cooking, to belly dancing to... bow hunting.

A sampling of local classes after the jump.

Art

+ The Albany Art Room has plenty of classes for adults including portraiture, mosaics and print making.

+ We've mentioned the classes at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy before. They have lots of interesting classes to choose from this month.

+ Learn that throwing isn't just for baseball at The Broken Mold in Troy

Cooking

+ The January classes at Different Drummer's Kitchen in Albany are sold out, but February looks promising (and open): chutneys, Moroccan, New England winter game dinner and others.

+ Chef Katherine Wardle has a whole host of cooking classes lined up in the New Year. The classes are held in Rexford.

+ Malden Bridge Cooking Class is about a 40 minute drive from Albany but with classes on the weekends, the drive should be a piece of cake.

Continuing Education

Continuing ed is usually an inexpensive way to learn. Check out your city for Jewelry Making or Real Estate Investing:

Dancing

+ Habiba (Donna Marie Tritico) teaches belly dance classes around the Capital Region -- she has classes at the Arts Center coming up in February.

+ At Lorraine Michaels Dance Center in Albany you can purchase a single class to check things out, or commit to any of their very varied options.

+ There are no pre-scheduled classes at the Albany Ballroom Social Dance Studio, but if you've got a group of like-minded friends they'll hold one for you.

+ And a site aptly called "Where to go ballroom dancing in Western MA, and the NY Capital District Area" has a calendar of myriad ballroom classes with locations in Albany, Latham, Troy and Cohoes.

Fiber Arts

+ Trumpet Hill in Albany had a variety of classes this fall and will have their full list of classes up on their website by the end of the week.

+ BeauKnits in Cohoes has a handful of classes lined up for the next two months, including how to knit a dog sweater.

+ This month the Spinning Room in Altamont can teach you how to make a shawl collared cowl or a felted bag.

Miscellaneous

+ Learn how to scuba dive through Capitaland Scuba in Clifton Park. The next class begins on January 19th.

+ Foreign language classes abound in the Capital Region, check out the post AOA did on them in 2009.

+ Or, maybe you want bowhunting to be your thing. The DEC has Sportsman Education Classes (you've got to travel a bit for the winter courses).

I already think you're awesome, AOA; but if you could find me a Finnish class in the area, I would love you forever.

@laiskiainen: That's a tough one. It looks like you NYC might have your closest option.

Anyone know of a beginner's electronics class for adults in the area?

Or maybe any local hackerspaces that might offer classes for beginners?

I'm a huge fan of the classes offered through the Troy's Art Center. I took a writing class through them last Spring and fell in love. My next class through them starts next Wednesday and I'm super psyched.

Thanks for the effort and the link, Greg! It was a long shot anyway.

I'm looking for classes offering how to make picture frames if anyone can help me. Thank you so much!

@Barb -- I believe the Art Center in Troy has offered picture framing in the past. Not on the current schedule, but you could contact them and maybe prompt them to offer it again.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
