Ride the rails, soon with wi-fi

Amtrak trains in the Empire Corridor are scheduled to get free wi-fi later this year, though a specific date has not yet been set. Upside: being able to work via the internet as the beautiful Hudson Valley scenery scrolls by. Downside: the part about working. (This could really cut into our Angry Birds time.) [TU]

As long as I can roll a dungeon in WoW while on the way to the City, I'll be happy.

What?! Whoa, slow down there Amtrak! What a concept! Hey Amtrak, I have an idea....why don't you get yourselves into the 2010's and provide your customers with what they need? Then, maybe, just maybe you'll get yourselves closer to operating out of the red. The next thing you might want to try is being on time and figuring out that people should not have to yield the tracks to freight. (and then, maybe some real food/tables in the diner car!)

"The next thing you might want to try is being on time and figuring out that people should not have to yield the tracks to freight."

I agree with you, but unfortunately Amtrak only owns small portions of the tracks on which they operate, so they have to yield to other traffic. On the Albany-NYC route, CSX (a freight railroad) owns the track north of Poughkeepsie while Metro North owns the track south of Poughkeepsie. (Amtrak does own most of the portion of the line in NYC itself running into Penn Station.) In most of the country, Amtrak is at the mercy of the freight railroads that own the tracks.

Nice to know that the trains are catching up with the buses. Now if they could just set it up so we could have a consistent cell signal, I could really get some work done.

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
