The week ahead

dave eggers

Monday at Skidmore: author Dave Eggers.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look ahead to, or take care of this week -- from the weather (windy), to Steve Martin, to slam poetry, to guitar, to dance, to music...

Weather

Here's the paraphrased forecast:

Monday: Sunny. Windy. Highs in the upper 30s.
Tuesday: Sunny. Still windy. Highs in the mid-40s.
Wednesday: Sunny. Not windy. Highs in the upper 40s.
Thursday: Less sunny. Chance of rain. Temps in mid-40s.
Friday: Cloudy. Chance of rain and snow. Temps in the 40s. Wah.
Weekend: About the same, but warmer.

Spring is a slow starter.

Hello, April

April -- which you may know as the fourth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar, and often a marker of warmer weather and the sprouting of flowers -- starts Friday. Be sure to give it a warm welcome. We've been waiting for you, April.

Dave Eggers

The author/publisher/hipster literary hero is giving a talk at Skidmore Monday night. $12 - 8 pm

Steve Martin

The actor/writer/comedian will be at The Palace Wednesday for the aptly-titled "An Evening with Steve Martin." WAMC's Joe Donahue will be asking questions -- both his own and those from the audience. Maybe they'll talk about art and the good people of Albany won't demand a refund like the uncultured masses of NYC. 8pm - tickets start at $45.75

Arts and Letters

+ Sci-fi/fantasy writer John Crowley is speaking at UAlbany's art museum Tuesday evening as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. For what it's worth, Harold Bloom's a big fan. 7 pm - free

+ The Frequency North series at St. Rose has two slam poets lined up for Thursday evening: Eboni Hogan and Jeanann Verlee. Here's Hogan imagining tweets from Tyra Banks. And here's Verlee's "unsolicited advice to adolescent girls with crooked teeth and pink hair." 7:30 pm - free

Dance

nicole beutler empacThursday and Friday at EMPAC: two new works by Amsterdam-based choreographer and director Nicole Beutler. From the blurbage:

Nicole Beutler works with the tension between intense emotionality and cool calculation while also reflecting on the history of theater. How do we look at emotions--what moves us and what doesn't? How does the past resonate in our contemporary reality? These are issues that are at stake in Nicole Beutler's work. Always searching for new forms, she currently is drawn to working with existing texts or dances.

Two different pieces -- "a dramatic solo performance in the style of a rock song-cycle" and a "fiendishly complex" piece for five dancers -- will be performed each night. Tickets are $15 for each performance -- or both for $20.

Music

+ Monday at Helsinki Hudson: John Doe and Jill Sobule. $18 - 8 pm

+ Guitarist Tim Reynolds -- who's frequently played with Dave Matthews -- is playing at St. Rose's Massry Center Wednesday night. $25 - 7:30 pm

+ Jazz/western swing group Hot Club of Cowtown will be at The Linda Wednesday night. $17 ahead / $20 day of - 8 pm

+ Blues guitar legend Buddy Guy is at The Egg Thursday night. tickets start at $39.50 - 7:30 pm

+ Noise rock band Lightning Bolt is at Valentine's Thursday night. Also on the bill: Beware! The Other Head of Science. 7 pm

+ Friday at Northern Lights: Gogol Bordello. $23 ahead / $25 day of - 8 pm

+ Friday night at The Egg: Toad the Wet Sprocket. Hello, 1994. $29.50 - 8 pm

These are a just a few things for this week. Know of something people should be looking forward to this week? Please share!

Look for our "Stuff to do this weekend" post on Friday.

I am doing the set dressing for this show, have sat through a few rehearsals, and can tell you - this one is worth going to see! The cast is awesome, and it's very true to the original musical, while having it's own personality as well.

What an amazing musical week we have!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
