What if 787 was different...
The Stakeholders have an event Tuesday evening about ideas for the Albany waterfront. From the event page: "We'll have design scenarios that have been produced by volunteer professional planners, architects, and transportation officials. There will be a short presentation on possible designs for I-787." It starts at 5 pm at the Victory Cafe.
Say Something!
We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.

I dream of 787 being eliminated, disguised, hidden, buried, or whatever. I think there are many ways that could be achieved. And I'm not even sure that it all needs to be accomplished at once, which could take care of the billion dollar price tag argument. Our various levels of government already invest significant amounts into ongoing maintenance and repair of all of our roads. Perhaps with 787, that investment can be planned to achieve long-term community goals of not having that roadway be such a blight along our riverfront. Even if the existing highway were converted into a boulevard with regular intersections, it would go a long way towards making our riverfront more accessible.

AOA - would love to see an in depth post that gets into the specifics of the cost of taking down 787, proposed projects, if the maintenance savings over time would help pay for it, etc.
Think about all the prime real estate along the Hudson if it weren't a wasteland. If the waterfront area was beautified and planned out - that alone could give downtown development a boost. Riverfront apartments with a view, barge restaurants, kayak rentals, etc... It could be awesome.

787 is the great shame of Albany, a brilliant glowing strip of evidence that the leaders of this city have spent the last fifty years building Albany for the use and convenience of suburban commuters instead of city residents. No wonder more than half of the city's personnel dollars go out to surrounding towns!
