Where to find stuff for making cheese?

rennet stirred into milkTim asks via Twitter:

Where I can get Rennet in/near Albany? I want to make cheese to go with the beer I'm brewing. PC on Delaware didn't have any.

Rennet is enzymes used to make cheese. We wouldn't guess that a regular grocery store would have it (seriously, we couldn't get yeast at one of the local supermarkets once), but a few cheese making how-to's mention that it's usually found in a supermarket's pudding section.

So, anyone have a tip for Tim? Please share!

Modern Homebrew on Rt 4 right near the intersection of 43 has a ton of beer and wine making supplies, and at least at the one in Cambridge, MA they also sell cheese making kits. I'd suggest calling. https://www.beerbrew.com/

The Homebrew Emporium (N. Greenbush & W. Mass) has some stuff for making cheese (and beer, obviously). Their staff has always been very supportive and helpful for me, so they should be able to lead you in the right direction.

By the way, The Arts Center of the Capital Region is now offering culinary arts classes and one of them includes cheese making this summer.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
