"I just thought, oh my God, what is wrong with these people?"

The latest article in the New York Times series about the treatment of people with developmental disabilities in state institutions focuses on Jonathan Carey's death and conditions institutions such as the O.D. Heck Center in Schenectady. From the article: "Dozens of people with direct experience in the system echoed a central complaint about the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities: that the agency fails to take complaints seriously or curtail abuse of its residents." Absolutely horrifying.

These people are some of the most vulnerable members of our community and we're allowing convicted criminals to care for them?

I can only imagine the agony and betrayal that Jonathan Carey's family must still feel.

Spending $1.5 million per patient per year....why then are they hiring uneducated ex-cons, working them 60 hours a week, and paying 30k a year? Working with this population requires a high level of sensitivity and very good judgment. I'd imagine it's also a burnout job. Where is all that money going? Which corrupt politicians or government workers have figured out how to profit from this despicable and broken system?

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
