The week ahead

ra ra riot in elevator

Ra Ra Riot's playing a free show in Ballson Spa Thursday.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look ahead to, or take care of this week -- from the weather (not bad), to the longest day, to Mallick, to Herzog, to Conan, to jazz, to Wilco...

Weather

Here's the paraphrased forecast:

Monday: Sunny and 80.
Tuesday: Sunny and warmer -- highs in the mid-80s. Some chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Wednesday: About the same, with more chance of rain.
Thursday: Cloudy, cooler -- highs in the mid-70s. 50/50 chance of rain.
Friday: About the same.
Weekend: Sunnier, warmer.

Not bad.

The longest day

The summer solstice is Tuesday at 12:16 pm. It's also the longest day of the year -- the sun will rise at 5:17 am and set at 8:37 pm, giving us daylight for 15 hour 19 minutes 20 seconds. $22 and up

Film

Three potentially interesting films open locally this Friday:

The Tree of Life: Terrence Malick impressionistic take on the origin and meaning of life. Critics have swooned over the film -- even if they're not sure if it all works.

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop: The documentary about Conan's post-Tonight Show "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour." The film reportedly includes many glimpses of Mean Conan, Cranky Conan, Exhausted Conan and Vulnerable Conan.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams: Werner Herzog's documentary about prehistoric cave paintings in France -- shot in 3D. (It will be the first 3D film shown at the Spectrum.) Reviews have been very positive.

Big, fuzzy and purple all over

Fair warning: Barney will be at the Palace for two shows on Thursday, in the afternoon (3 pm) and evening (6:30 pm).

Ra Ra Riot

Indie chamber rock (or whatever you want to call it) group Ra Ra Riot is playing in Ballston Spa's Wiswall Park Thursday evening (map). And it's free. The show starts at 6 pm.

Solid Sound Festival

The Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival is this coming weekend at MASS MoCA. In addition to a bunch of music, there's also comedy (John Hodgman and Wyatt Cenac are in the mix) and art (the galleries will be open).

Single day passes are still available for all three days ($65/$78/$65). Three day passes are $124.50.

JazzFest at SPAC

The lineup for this year's JazzFest includes Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Michael McDonald, George Wein and the Newport All Stars, Angelique Kidjo, and Ben Allison. The festival runs Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $45.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
