Marriage as conversational production, oh no!
State assemblywoman Jane H. Todd on why New York State needed a waiting period to discourage hasty marriages, in 1936: "Gin weddings -- hasty marriages entered into for the sake of headlines, 'adventure' or merely for the purpose of 'surprising friends' and adding to the conversational production of the world -- should, as I view it, be discouraged." NYS still has a waiting period (it's now 24 hours). [NYT]
