On this date in 1813, the United States became an uncle
The state's tourism bureau, better known as I Love NY, just reported on its Twitter feed that, on September 7th of 1813, the now-long-defunct Troy Post gave the United States its "Uncle Sam" nickname. The real Uncle Sam was, of course, Samuel Wilson, a Troy meat packer who provided meat to the Army.
