Murder capital of New York State
It's Newburgh, reports NY Mag: "Despite its small size and bucolic setting, Newburgh occupies one of the most dangerous four-mile stretches in the northeastern United States." One of the main roots of the problem: gangs. Though an FBI agent using "a tricky mix of blunt force and empathy" is apparently making a dent in the problem. (The article, by Patrick Radden Keefe, includes some interesting bits about the atomization of gangs and gang culture.)

I'm trying to figure out how one can possibly use "bucolic" and "Newburgh" in the same sentence. The city is a run-down Northeast city from the 19th century, with all that that implies, and outside it is the standard suburban never-never-land of highway ramps and big box stores.
