Occupy Albany

occupy wall street thumbnailThere's a meeting this Sunday in Albany for the local manifestation of the Occupy movement (5 pm at the Grand Street Community Arts). Here's the list of proposals that grew out of the previous meeting. We were in NYC last weekend and stopped by the Occupy Wall Street location to check it out. It was an unusual scene -- we saw Ron Paul supporters chatting up people at the Socialist party table. It'll be interesting to see how the movement takes definition here in the Capital Region. A lot of people are upset -- but the important question is how that frustration is focused.

They have a lot more to worry about on Grand Street than Wall Street.

I had hoped the people of the Capital District were smarter than the raging, burned-out Marxists in other US cities.

What a shame.

Not only are these people the "99%," but they're also likely to be in the 50% of Americans who don't pay income taxes. Ironic, considering the concept of 'paying your fair share.'

"You cannot bring prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further brotherhood of men by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

@jon I bet you wish you could be part of that 50% not paying income taxes huh? Livin' that easy luxurious life. I too am outraged by those no-tax-fat-cats always trying to "tear down/weaken/pull down/ DESTROY" the wealthy with their proposals of taking a small additional fraction of the wealthy's grotesquely disproportionally large income. Exploitation of the wealthy has been going on too long, they're practically being enslaved. It's tyranny by the masses is what it is!

What we are witnessing on Wall Street and growing through the rest of the country is the ability to speak and demonstrate freely about your concerns, wants and desires. This is a right that is truly American and is being exercised as it should be. As with any movement there will be detractors on all sides but the core ideas are to be looked at and studied for their validity. In this case the concerns are legitimate and should be up for discussion and debate. This is what the Tea Party demanded upon their inception and the Occupy movement should be accorded the same courtesy.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
