All hail Mr. Dave

genesee cream ale rfsuny thumbnailThis is great: the excellent Ridiculous Food Society of Upstate New York got a shoutout in NYT's Diner's Journal today. Said Julia Moskin in the "What We're Reading" post: "This blogger produces homemade bacon and pickles, is obsessed (in a friendly way) with fast food, and also has expertise in Albany-area specialties like riggies, Utica greens, and Genesee Cream Ale."

That's awesome. Congrats, Mr. Dave.

Thanks!

Congrats! But y'know, if that person was paying any attention at all, they'd know that "Albany-area specialties like riggies, Utica greens, and Genesee Cream Ale" makes her look really, really stupid. Albany =/ Utica!

M-

My thoughts exactly upon reading the blurb. I hope I don't get any hate mail from Uticans (this has happened before).

Eh, I'm not surprised. As far as the NYT (and most other people in NYC) are concerned, "upstate" New York is a giant, nondescript blob consisting of everything north of the Tappan Zee Bridge. In their eyes, Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, Rochester, and Buffalo are pretty much interchangeable.

However, congrats to Mr. Dave on the mention! One of these days I'm going to try making Utica greens for myself; had it not been for you, I'd have never heard of this dish.

@M: The Albany/Utica thing caught me, too. But for a lot of people in NYC, anything north of Westchester is "upstate" -- and it might as well be the same place.

Actually, that's often true for people in the other big East Coast cities, too. I remember at the old place, we would sometimes get calls from NPR looking for someone to cover a story out near Buffalo. You know, because it was upstate.

Awesome! After I started reading that blog I can barely go into a Stewart's without thinking of Mr. Dave.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
