OnStar drops the dime
Albany police say they were alerted to an early Tuesday morning single car crash near Lincoln Park by an OnStar operator after the 2011 Buick's OnStar unit automatically reported the accident (map). Officers showed up, no driver -- witnesses said he had taken off. APD tracked him down a few blocks away, and police say the man scored above .18 on a breathalyzer during booking (legal limit is .08). Full release after the jump.
APD: DWI Arrest/Accident
Albany police arrested a South Pearl Street man for Aggravated DWI after he fled the scene of a single car accident on Oneida Terrace early this morning.
Miguel Medina was operating a 2011 Buick Regal at 2:05 a.m. when he crashed into a utility pole at the corner of Oneida and Catherine Street. The car he was driving was equipped with OnStar. The dispatcher from OnStar called communications to report the car that Medina was driving had been in a crash. Officers were dispatched to the scene and were told by a witness that Medina had abandoned the car and was headed towards Slingerland Street. Officers located Medina opposite Bishop Maginn High School.
Medina had an strong odor of alcohol on his breath, his speech was slurred and was unsteady on his feet. Officers attempted to administer field sobriety tests but Medina refused to cooperate and was combative. After his refusal he was brought to Central Booking were he agreed to submit to a breathalyzer test. He tested above .18.
Medina was charged with Aggravated DWI, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident and Refusal to Take a Breath Test.
He was arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court this morning.
