Tickets for TEDxAlbany 2011

The Veggie Mobile's Eric Krans talking at TEDxAlbany last year.

Drawing's closed. The winner has been emailed.

The second TEDxAlbany is coming up Saturday, November 12 at The Linda. The event is a local version of the popular TED series. Last year's TEDxAlbany was interesting -- not only the speakers, but also the people attending -- and this year's lineup also looks good.

AOA has two tickets to give away, and we might even give them to you. To enter the drawing, please answer this question in the comments:

What's one interesting thing you've noticed recently?

This could be anything -- something small you noticed on your way to work, or some grand truth about the universe. We'll draw one comment at random.

We're looking forward to seeing a bunch of this year's speakers, including Sarah Gordon from FarmieMarket, Union College psychology professor Chris Chabris (The Invisible Gorilla, and Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us), id29's Doug Bartow, Outspoken Media's Lisa Barone ("What Stuttering Taught Me About Running A Business"), and UAlbany professor John Delano (New York Center for Astrobiology). And there are a bunch of others lined up.

TEDxAlbany is from 9 am to 5 pm that Saturday. Tickets are $75 (general) and $37.50 (students) -- that includes lunch.

Important: All comments must be submitted by 5 pm on Friday (November 4, 2011) to be entered in the drawing. You must answer the question to be part of the drawing. One entry per person, please. You must enter a valid email address (that you check regularly -- seriously, if you win, we want to give you the tickets) with your comment. The winner will be notified via email by 9 am on Monday and must respond by 9 am Tuesday (November 8).

AOA is a media sponsor of TEDxAlbany.

People's knowledge-seeking behavior is changing. Once upon a time little boys and girls looked to older siblings and friends for answers to things like "how do you kiss?" now they google it, or find a Ted Talk!

I've noticed that TED talks are among the stuff white people like:

Despite the snow, frost, and hurricane this season, my palm tree has refused to die.

There must be some "inner-resilience" connection this...

I've noticed how much my handwriting had suffered since I am almost always typing... like now.

I've noticed that All Over Albany is a kickass blog!

I've noticed that the less you want the more you get out of life

Today I was listening to the latest This American Life, which was about Middle School. It was a great episode. They talked about how brain development in early adolescence means that you really sort of lock in what you learn at that period of your life, which was a revelation that explains why I remember old dance & gymnastics routines so vividly (I've always wondered).

Plus it gave me a fresh perspective on middle school, which I've already been dreading on my daughters' behalf. That first segment almost made me look forward to it as an opportunity for growth.

Then the other segments brought me right back to dreading it again. . . .

I've noticed that every great innovation seems to come along just after I would have been able to use it!

I noticed that people's excuses for why they need a dollar haven't updated to the digital age. I would be way morel likely to give a guy a dollar who said he needed to top up his cell phone for an important call than to get a bus to schenectady.

I've noticed how grateful I've become for all the good things in my life.

I've noticed that there seems to be not only an income gap but also an 'interest gap': some people seem to want to know and understand more about the world around them. At the same time it seems that some people seem to want to retract themselves, wanting to know less in the process.

Ive noticed that Im getting old. and cranky.

I've noticed that life is much better when you surround yourself with interesting and smart people. But that's not recent.

My recent observation is that despite rapidly approaching 50, a new found interest in learning. I've recently taken to teaching myself about new things that interest me. Not just curiosity and exploring, but good old crack open a textbook and learn something.

I've noticed that people are more likely to be diligent in a task for other people, than for themselves. For example, I desperately need to clean out my basement; it's so messy it irritates me every time I walk into it. However, today I spent 3 hours preparing gingerbread houses for the 4H Club to decorate, because I promised someone I would. Maybe I need someone ELSE to require me to clean out my basement, and then it'll get done!

I notice the Capital Region music scene slowly but surely seems to be getting more respect outside of the immediatearea - and that's pretty sweet!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
