Tom Perrotta
Novelist Tom Perrotta will be at UAlbany Tuesday as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Perrotta's written a bunch of books that have caught attention over the last decade or so, among them: Election and Little Children. His new book is The Leftovers, about what happens to the people in a "formerly comfortable suburban community" left behind after the rapture -- here's a review by Stephen King in NYT. 8 pm Assembly Hall uptown campus - free

Solar power
NANOvember at the UAlbany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering finishes with a talk by Pradeep Haldar, CNSE's VP for clean energy programs on Monday. He'll be talking about the photovoltaic industry and solar energy research going at the college. (There's a $300something million solar energy research consortium in the works at the college.) 6:30 pm - free
Sex in a Epidemic
On Tuesday filmmaker Jean Carlomusto will come to the Sanctuary for Independent Media to present her film Sex in an Epidemic, about the grassroots response to HIV and AIDS and development of the concept of "safe sex." Here's a review of the doc. 7 pm - $10 suggested donation

Addams Family
The touring company of the The Addams Family Broadway show opens Tuesday at Proctors for a six day ooky spooky run. Tickets start at $20
Nutcrackers at the Egg
The Egg is presenting a number of versions of the Nutcracker this week, including a mini matinee on Wednesday at 10am, a short and suite on Friday at 10:30 am, and two regular versions on Saturday. 10 am Wednesday, 10:30 am Friday, 2 pm and 7:30 pm Saturday. $9.50-$30.50
A jazzy Peanuts Christmas
Vince Guaraldi is the guy who wrote all those Peanuts Christmas songs that make you feel like dancing like a cartoon character every time you hear them. On Friday, The Peanut Gallery Trio will perform them at Saint Rose. The school added a second show after the first sold out. 7 pm and 9 pm. $20 for general audience, $10 for students and free for children under 6.
Albany Symphony The ASO has its "Magic of Christmas" shows lined up this week at Palace. Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3 pm - $25 and up
Annual Greens Show
The opening night of the Rensselaer County Historical Society and the Van Rensselaer Garden Club's 55th Annual Greens Show -- a big holiday themed flora display -- is this Thursday. This year's theme is "My Favorite Things." The Greens Show will run through the weekend until the Victorian Stroll. The Thursday night opening is also family night -- children are admitted for free. $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children over 4.

Saratoga
The annual Victorian Streetwalk in Saratoga Springs is Thursday night. Broadway in downtown will be closed to vehicles, and most of the businesses will be open late offering refreshments. 6-10 pm - free
Troy
The Turkey Trot might be Troy's pre-game to the holiday season, but the Victorian Stroll is the official kick-off. For one day, all of the shops in downtown transform into even quainter versions of themselves, and there's entertainment throughout the streets. Sunday at 11 am - free
Japanther
Performance art duo Japanther will be unveiling the product of its EMPAC residency with a performance Friday and Saturday night called "The Cake of The 3 Towers." From the blurbage:
The three towers are prison, museum, and (housing) project, albeit loosely. Music, video, and performance draw parallel lines between the three industrial archetypes. Moving through these structures, the artists utilize fragments of their environment to envision a utopian creative endgame.
Apparently there's also an Austrian super villain. Friday and Saturday at 8 pm - $18
Also at EMPAC: Neil Rolnick, the electronic composer and founder of RPI's Integrated Electronic Arts MFA returns to EMPAC on Thursday to perform select scenes from MONO, a work that explores the fragility of perception and how our abilities to perceive shape us. 7:30 pm - free

Tuesday: The Naked and The Famous at Jillian's
Indie pop rock. From New Zealand. With: Around the World and Back. It's a free WEQX show. doors at 7 pm
Wednesday: Alice Cooper at the Palace
The king of the glam-horror metal genre is back with another nightmare. 8pm - $24.50-$59.50

Playing his signature reggae freak folk. 8pm - $15

The jazz rock pioneers turned ballad hit machines will run through their hits. 8pm - $40-$80

Friday: MIRK at Washington Ave Armory
It's an album-debut show. Admission includes a copy of the album. With: The City Never Sleeps, Eric Sosa, Wordspit Da Illest, King Dreams. 7 pm - $15
Friday: Justin Townes Earle at Helsinki Hudson
Americana man. 9 pm - $22 ahead / $25 day of
Friday: Jeremy Denk at the Union College Memorial Chapel
Denk will play the music of Beethoven, Brahms and Ligeti. 8 pm - $8-$20
Saturday: Sgt Dunbar at the Sanctuary for Independent Media
A benefit for the Sanctuary's Youth Media Sanctuary project. The show will be audio/video recorded and webcast for the "Live From Lock One" concert series. 8 pm - $10 ($5 students)
Saturday: A Saratoga Christmas with the McKrells at the Spa Little Theater
The McKrells put on their version of a Christmas pageant. 7:30pm, $15
Sunday: Matthew Carefully at Caffe Lena
He'll be playing music he created for the Brunswick soundtrack. With: Bailiwick. 7 pm - $10 ahead / $12 at the door

Saratoga's version of the Victorian Stroll happens this Thursday from 6-10pm on a completely-blocked-to-traffic Broadway. Drink some hot cider, listen to live music, ask Santa for that pony you've always wanted, and end the night with a couple of doughboys to help keep up your energy as you prepare to attack the holiday season head-on!

Defiantly Head to the Mirk and the New Familiars show this Friday at the Armory. They are a phenomenal band and it is sure to be an entertaining evening.
