Gay rights advocates supporting Roy McDonald
State Senator Roy McDonald and three other Republican lawmakers who broke ranks with the party to vote for marriage equality have been getting quite a bit of financial help from gay rights advocates. All four were threatened with political retribution from party conservatives for their Marriage Equality votes. The NY Times reports that McDonald, who went viral last summer when he came out in favor of Marriage Equality, raised $447 thousand in the six months after since the vote -- 27 times what he raised in the same period in 2009. Thanks to Roy McDonald's principled stand last year, and to the campaign of retribution by the oddly-named "National Organization for Marriage," I'm now seriously considering voting for Senator McDonald in the next state senate election.
