The Obamas
Monday at Skidmore: Penn State professor Paul Taylor will give a talk about the Obama presidency "what does racial transformation look like, and feel like, in Barack and Michelle Obama's America?" 7 pm Palamountain Hall - free

Islam and Islamaphobia in America
Tuesday at Union College: Harvard professor Diana Eck, who studies "the challenges of religious pluralism in a multi-religious society" -- will be giving a talk about Islam in the United the States. 5:30 pm Nott Memorial - free

Anne Enright
Wednesday at RPI, as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series: Irish writer Ann Enright will be talking about her new new novel The Forgotten Waltz (NYT review). Enright won the Man Booker Prize in 2007 for The Gathering. 8 pm Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies Building - free

The Kite Runner
Wednesday at UAlbany: a new stage adaption of the popular novel The Kite Runner, featuring Sorab Wadia. 7:30 pm Performing Arts Center, uptown campus - $15 / $10 students

Tool is Loot
Friday and Saturday at EMPAC: a duet by choreographers/dancers Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey based on a year of working apart. 8 pm both days - $18

Memphis

The touring production of the Broadway musical Memphis is at Proctors this week. The show -- based on a story about a Memphis DJ that starts to play music by African-Americans on the radio in the 1950s -- won the 2010 Tony for best musical. Tuesday through Sunday, check for times - $20 and up

Tuesday at Different Drummer's at Stuyvesant Plaza: a cooking class by the Chefs Consortium about local organic milk and "turning it into incredibly delicious dairy dishes": Greek yogurt cheesecake, homemade ricotta, yogurt, custard, pana cotta. 6 pm - $65

Ommegang and wild game
Wednesday at City Beer Hall: a wild game dinner paired with beers from Brewery Ommegang. 6 pm - $60

Cupcake class
Wednesday at Gio Culinary Studio: a cupcakes and buttercream class. "Students will learn professional techniques to produce 2 classic styles of real buttercream frosting, turn them into different flavors and use them to decorate their own gourmet cupcakes." 6:15 pm - $45

Urban Roots
Saturday at Brown's Brewing: a tasting of local foods paired with Brown's beer, following by a screening of Urban Roots -- a documentary about the emerging urban farming scene in Detroit. 6 pm - $38

River Street Riot

Saturday at the Arts Center of the Capital Region: The River Street Riot, a rockabilly dance party that benefits the Arts Center. Live music by The Tichy Boys, along with swing dance lessons and a dance contest. Also: a vintage fashion show with pinup girls and rockabilly guys. Food by Dinosaur Bar-B-Q and Sticky Fingers. 6 pm - $15 ahead / $20 at the door

Repairing old windows

On Saturday the Historic Albany Foundation has a class lined up on how to "remove, repair, and rehang your wood windows." A lot of houses in this area have these sorts of windows. When this question came up recently on AOA, this class -- taught by Jack Alvarez -- got a handful of recommendations. 10 am-2 pm - $10

Tuesday, April 17th– 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm – It’s our monthly Bluegrass Jam at Jose Malone’s in downtown Troy. Musicians – bring your gear and some good songs! If you haven’t made it to Jose Malone’s yet, come on out and see for yourself how beautiful this venue is and how much fun we’ve been having. They also have a great menu and their chef is so very talented. Mike McMann and Peggy Lecuyer host this jam on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.

Monday night: Front Parlor Series Storytelling at The Olde English Pub in downtown Albany hosted by yours truly - 7:00pm (or thereabouts) start time with a theme of "Duped!" Come, throw your name in the coffee can to share a story, or simply sit and listen. The fish and chips are outstanding, and so is the company!
