My Exit: Kevin Wright and Heather Wright

Thumbnail image for Phish fish.jpgIt's Monday, which means WEXT is running another My Exit show -- where the listeners get to pick their own playlists.

This week, a family jam band session....

Who?
Heather Wright and Kevin Wright, both from Rotterdam. Kevin is originally from Rochester, Heather is from Rotterdam. We are brother and sister-in-law. We had an idea that it would be awesome if WEXT had a one hour program each week highlighting jam band music. Something a little more varied than just The Grateful Dead. So we thought: Why not try a My Exit? Then we thought: "Hey why not do it together -- in hopes someone would love it and ask us to do it every week. We both work in area school districts. Kevin has both a son and daughter. Heather has a daughter and one on the way.

How would you describe your taste in music?
We both share an eclectic taste in music, ranging from hip hop,to rock,to jam. Kevin has an extensive collection of music and enjoys sharing it with others. Heather enjoys listening to any music anyone wants to share with her. We both love an array of jam band musicians. One hour just didn't seem enough to share all that we wanted and our list of songs had to be cut. Below are some of our top picks.

A few songs from Kevin & Heather's My Exit:

"Bathtub Gin" - Phish
Of course, when you think of jam bands, Phish would be one of the first to pop into your head. We chose "Bathtub Gin" not only because it's a classic Phish jam without going too overboard with the jam, but Heather met the women who wrote this song and grew up with Trey Anastasio. She wanted the "Bathtub Gin"" bootleg t-shirt that Heather's boyfriend at the time was wearing. After a lot of discussion we exchanged information about sending the t-shirt to her. In exchange we got 4 free tickets to two Phish shows -- great seats.

"Soulshine" - Gov't Mule
Mr. Warren Haynes! We are huge fans of anything Haynes and with a distinctive and legendary writing and guitar playing, how could Gov't Mule not be included?

"Front Porch" - Umphrey's McGee
Just a great tune by one of our favorite jam bands, a progressive rock band based out of Chicago. This song makes you want to sit on your front porch, drink a beer and get down.

"Uninvisible" - Medeski, Martin and Wood
MMW, an avant-groove jazz trio is a band you just want to chill to. Their instrumental urban funk music is worthwhile and seems like you can't get enough. MMW are huge on the jam band circuit playing with a variety of musicians.

"Home Again" - The Disco Biscuits
Disco Biscuits perform a head spinning, feet hurting, feeling good live show. Their electronic rock fusion is innovative and attention grabbing not only on the jam band scene but on a national level. "Home Again" is one among many of great tunes!

You can hear Heather and Kevin's My Exit show tonight at 8 on 97.7 or at exit977.org.

Here's how to schedule your own My Exit show on WEXT.
