Today's moment of globalization
One of the ingredients used in the solution injected into the ground during fracking is guar gum, the main global source of which is small-scale farmers in India. The fracking boom in the United States (which potentially will include New York) has thus led to a guar gum boom in India, with prices for the commodity increasing more 150 percent and talk of a guar gum bubble. You might recognize guar gum, or, at least, eat a lot of it -- the substance is used as a thickener/binder in foods. Start reading labels -- you'll notice it all sorts of stuff.
