The week ahead

a trip to the moon color still

This week: more fun than a poke in the eye from a rocket ship.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look forward to, or keep busy with this week, from the weather (May-like), to Art on Lark, to arts in Saratoga, to a trip to the moon, to beer and food, to the Civil War, to Alive at Five, to music...

Weather

Here's the paraphrased forecast:

Monday: Cloudy, rainy, cool. Highs in the low 60s.
Tuesday: Cloudy, maybe some more rain. Highs in the mid 60s.
Wednesday: Repeat, but a bit warmer.
Thursday: Could it be... some sun. Highs around 70.
Friday: Sunny, chance of a thunderstorm. Low 70s.
Weekend: Sunny, high 70s and low 80s.

June, why so chilly?

Art on Lark

The annual Art on Lark festival is Saturday. Lark Street will turned into a pedestrian area with art and music. Some of the artful stuff this year: a mock bus station by Chip Fasciana, and yarn bombing. And the music lineup: Babe City, Matthew Carefully, The College Farm, Mike Grutka, Ashton Williams Band, Betsi Krisniski. 10 am-5 pm

Saratoga Arts Fest

The Saratoga Arts Fest is Thursday through Sunday. The annual multi-event, mult-venue festival includes music, dance, visual art, film, and theater.

The opening night is at SPAC with a modern dance performance by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (which includes full nudity). And a few of the musical events from the festival schedule: Don McLean performing "American Pie" in the town where he didn't actually write it -- and Kristin Hersh (yes, of Throwing Muses).

Civil War on Trial

Movies

Summer blockbuster season is quickly becoming overgrown. There's the The Avengers (it's good), of course. Snow White and the Huntsman (mixed reviews) out last week. And now Ridley Scott's Prometheus out this Friday -- with a bunch of midnight screenings Thursday night (including at the Spectrum).

These are a just a few things for this week. Know of something people should be looking forward to this week? Please share!

Look for our "Stuff to do this weekend" post on Friday.

SPAC advertises on AOA, as does Albany Law.

Comments

Midnight showing of Prometheus at the Spectrum sounds ... psychologically traumatizing. I just might do that.

This Thursday there is a great show at Pete Edwards space (51 3rd St Troy) with Severe Severe, Filmstrip, and Girls of Porn

do NOT miss Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane at SPAC. His repertory concerts are becoming fewer as he focuses on evening length works (which are also awesome) and it has been over a decade since I last had the pleasure of seeing “D-Man in the Water” (at Jacob's Pillow). he is an amazing artist and his dancers are stunning (and many are cross trained with a sport so they are super athletic dancers). It is modern dance that is accessible even to those who “don’t get” modern dance.

I recommend that anyone who is even a little interested check out the Vic Wooten show. I've seen the guy four times and every time it seems more amazing than the last. I have never seen anyone manipulate the bass the way that Vic does.

For anyone with kids, check out Stevesongs at steamer no 10 on Saturday, 2 shows, 11:00 and 2:00. (Mr Steve as seen on PBS.)

Don't forget to stop by the Upstate Artists Guild (UAG) at 247 Lark Street, during Saturday's Art on Lark and vote for your favorite art piece in the annual People's Choice one day art show extravaganza!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
