Interesting bit from this AP story about co-ops reacting to challenges from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's: one of the indicators Whole Foods uses in gauging the potential of new market is the presence of successful co-op. If I were the coop, I'd focus heavily on the local produce selection and expand the cafe/deli/ready-to-eat foods. Neither one is done well at TJs - and both require frequent visits to replenish, unlike most of the pre-packaged, processed items at Trader Joe's where you can stock-up and return in a few weeks.
