My Exit: Vinylmania
Happy Monday. To ease you into this holiday week, here's a preview of tonight's WEXT My Exit show -- where the listeners get to pick their own playlists.
Tonight's show is a bit of a throwback from the folks at Vinylmania.
Who?
We're August Rosa and Amanda Town from Albany, NY.
August Rosa works at the Downtown Albany BID. Amanda Town works for The Community Builders Inc. On the side we throw vinyl dance parties under the name Vinylmania. For 1st Friday we spin records at Elda's on Lark Street playing the best tunes from the late 40s to the mid 60s, showcasing the roots of Rock N' Roll (Beatlemania, Surf Rock, Garage Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Motown, Doo Wop, etc.). The next one is on December 7th at 11:00 PM at Elda's on Lark.
How would you describe your taste in music?
Although we love music from all genres, tonight's show is only going to focus on tunes from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The idea is to bring folks back to a different era. These songs will be a sample of what you might hear at Vinylmania, so if you're tired of doing the same thing every weekend, swing by and dance!
A few songs from Vinylmania's My Exit program:
The Kinks - "All Day And All Of The Night"
This song is what inspired the Vinylmania dance party idea. We were in a bar in Brooklyn, someone played this track, and it ignited the whole bar into a dance frenzy. It's awesome that they destroyed the speaker cones in their amplifiers with a razor blade to make the music sound as gnarly as possible. The energy from old live clips of the Kinks is unbelievable, girls and guys alike freaking out, having out-of-body experiences.
The Clovers - "Love Potion #9"
It has been said that people were drinking a lot of Love Potion #9 at our last dance party at Elda's.
Booker T and the MG's - "Green Onions"
This song should be played as loud as possible. Try it sometime.
The Ventures - "Walk Don't Runz"
We will definitely be grabbing some more instrumental tracks. The Ventures, The Surfaris, The Marketts, The Dartells. All of these old surf and garage bands have such a good sound.
The Monks - "Complication"
This band had a few reissues through Light In The Attic Records, our favorite label at the moment. Their motto is "We dig through crates so you don't have to!" They have put out some awesome reissues including Betty Davis, Kris Kristofferson, Rodriguez, and Serge Gainsbourg, as well as new artists such as The Black Angels, another one of our favorites.
Vinylmania's next event is Albany 1st Friday, December 7 at 11 PM at Elda's on Lark
You can hear Vinylmania's My Exit show Monday night at 8 pm on 97.7 or at exit977.org.
Here's how to schedule your own My Exit show on WEXT.

"Complication" is easily one of the two the best tracks on Black Monk Time. The other is "I Hate You" (its simplicity is awesome). Kudos!
