The Last Waltz
The Palace's classic movie series is showing Martin Scorsese's doc about The Band's farewell concert, The Last Waltz on Monday. It includes appearances from a bunch of famous musicians, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison and others. Monday 7 pm - $5
Wings of Desire
The Saratoga Film Forum is showing Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire Monday, with a discussion afterward. It's the first in a new "Town & Gown Movie Series" with Skidmore. (Wings of Desire was remade as the Nicholas Cage film City of Angels) Monday 7:30 pm
The Single Girls Guide
Premiering Tuesday at Capital Rep: The Single Girl's Guide. Blurbage:
In the stylish world of 1964 Manhattan, beloved newspaper columnist Emma Woodhouse is still single and about to turn 30. As her father urges her to marry the first available man - and her editor urges her to toe the line, she begins to transform her household advice column into a platform for change, encouraging readers to drop their casseroles, question the nature of marriage and demand sexual freedom.

Christa Parravani
Thursday at the State Museum: photographer and author (and Schenectady native) Christa Parravani will be talking about her new memoir, Her -- which tells the story of the early death of her identical twin and her struggle to cope with the loss (reviews on Good Reads). Here's Parravani discussing the book last week on WNYC. Part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Thursday 8 pm Huxley Theater - free

Saratoga history
Monday at the Saratoga Springs Public Library: Skidmore students will be giving a presentation on the history of some of Saratoga's spiritual traditions and places. It's part of a year's worth of research. Monday 7 pm - free
Poetry
Tuesday at Union College: Richard Blanco, the poet who read at the presidential inauguration, will be reading his work. Here's a recent NYT profile of him. Tuesday 7 pm Nott Memorial - free
Mushrooms
Tuesday at the East Greenbush Community Library: Sue Van Hook, the chief mycologist for Ecovative, will be talking about identifying mushrooms and fungi, how they're cultivated, and how Ecovative is using them to make materials that can replace styrofoam. Presented by the Greenbush Garden Club. Tuesday 6:30 pm
Surrealist sculpture
Sculptor Sergei Isupov will be at Skidmore Tuesday for an illustrated talk. Blurbage: "Often called an erotic Surrealist for his daring representations of sexuality, relationships, and human encounter, Isupov takes narrative subject matter and merges it with ceramic sculptural form." Recording the Beatles
Wednesday at Skidmore: music producer/recording engineer Ken Scott will be discussing his work with the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Elton John, David Bowie and a bunch of other famous acts. Wednesday 7 pm Filene Music Building - free
Experimentation
Wednesday at EMPAC: Greg Moynahan, an associate professor in the history and science, technology, and society programs at Bard College, will be talking about how experimentation in both the sciences and the arts influenced the development of both in Europe -- specifically the cases of Nicholas of Cusa and Gottfried Leibniz. Part of the Observer Effects series. Wednesday 6 pm -free
Harriet Tubman
Friday and Saturday at UAlbany: "Harriet Tubman: A Legacy of Resistance," a symposium celebrating the 100th anniversary of the passing of the abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor (among many other roles). On the slate: talks, panel discussions, workshops, and performances. open to the public - $30 / $5 students
Underground Railroad in the Adirondacks
Monday at Union College: historian Don Papson will be giving a talk about the history of the Underground Railroad in the North Country. Monday 5:30 pm Nott Memorial - free
Fela!
