Poor kumquats

Nothing is safe from the New York State budget process, not even uncommon citrus fruit. During a late night budget debate in the state Senate this week the kumquat came to symbolize to undesirable aspects items in the budget. (As opposed to short bread, which are desirable items in the budget. Obviously.) Well, if you think Florida kumquat growers are just going to stand idly by while their fruit is denigrated, then you don't know a thing about Florida kumquat growers (marmalade!). And as it turns out, kumquats are currently quite the hot culinary item. (Incidentally, this is not a storyline from early season of The West Wing. We checked.) [NYT] [TU] [Grub Street]
