Dam!
Interesting stuff over at the Watershed Post about the $400 million reconstruction project on the Gilboa Dam in Schoharie County (here's a Daily Gazette photoset). Some of the numbers involved kind of make your head swim -- the 87-year-old dam holds the Schoharie Creek to form the 17.6-billion-gallon Schoharie Reservoir, one of the stores of drinking water for New York City.

Based on the numbers given, if the dam fails, it will spill 877,000 gallons of water per second for over 5 1/2 hours before it is empty.
Dam, that's a lotta water.
