Along the rail trail
About 100 property owners along the Albany County Rail Trail are suing the federal government as part of a class action suit, the Spotlight's Charles Wiff reports -- their attorneys are arguing the property owners should be compensated for easements on their property that accompanied the old rail line (the suit doesn't threaten the trail itself). The law firm heading up the case is based in Missouri and has a "dedicated team" for this type of case -- it's pursuing them in states all over the country, which has resulted in some rather large contingency fees for the firm. (Here's a discussion of the legal issues from a few years back from an attorney for a rails to trails org.) [Spotlight] [Kansas City Business Journal] [Rails to Trails]

Thanks for posting this story, AOA! I had gotten my hopes up when I read http://www.altamontenterprise.com/index.php/news/new-scotland/451-rail-trail-in-new-scotland-to-open-in-june. I hope this issue gets resolved so that the trail can open.
