Electric City
Another film -- appropriately titled Electric City -- is set to film in Schenectady this summer. Among its producers: Metta World Peace -- yep, the NBA player (formerly known as Ron Artest)*. Metta -- or, World Peace -- is even slated to appear in a scene at Newest Lunch. [Daily Gazette]
Here's a plot outline for Electric City. The director and writer is Nick DeRuve, a Schenectady native and Niskayuna High School grad. (One of his student films: The Inner Workings of William Balltown. Nisky reference?) Here's a little bit of background on both the movie and DeRuve. He's been posting bits about production on on Twitter and Facebook.
The Electric City cast includes Joey Lauren Adams, Emma Holzer (Boardwalk Empire, Spring Breakers), Liz Mikel (Smash's mom on Friday Night Lights), and Harrison Holzer.
* Our favorite Metta World Peace/Ron Artest Moment: When he thanked his psychiatrist after the Lakers won the title in 2010.

My favorite MWP moment was right before this season. Hopefully they got him on some new meds to deal with those delusions of grandeur.
"We definitely want to beat the Bulls record and go 73-9," he said. "That’s definitely something that I want to do. Whoever is out there at the beginning of the season then we gotta get it. It’s as simple as that. We just have to go get it."

Oh, great! More fame for Schenectady!
I do not want to see Schenectady turn into some place that famous people are flocking too. First we have the city profiled on This American Life*, and then we have Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper playing All American Boys, and now this!
Rents will go through the roof, I will not be able to get a reservation at a decent restaurant, and what about the people who will be displaced by the rich and famous? Can someone please think of the children?
*Yes, I know Pat Riley started it, comparing Schenectady to the "South Beach of Upstate NY".
