Casting the net for an Albany aquarium

The TU's Tim O'Brien talked with Nancy Behrens, the organizer behind the Albany Aquarium Facebook page, about her plans to raise money for a feasibility study for the project. This idea has been in circulation for a few years now -- it seems to prompt a lot of excitement (and some skepticism).

A local aquarium would be amazing, even a small-scale one. It might be difficult to get funded, even with a positive feasibility study. Unless... Behrens should pitch the idea of an Albany Aquarium-Casino to Gov. Cuomo!

Have you ever gone to Davey Jones Locker on Delaware Ave? Admission is free and they have lots of cool tanks. There's even a really nice art gallery in the back room.

Bonus: The entire store is the gift shop.

A local aquarium would make a great addition to the Albany area.

A possible location could be Peebles Island State park, at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. There are several large historic buildings vacant which could be renovated. It could serve a dual purpose, creating an aquarium/interpretive center for the Mohawk and Hudson River ecosystems, while preserving a historic structure. (I believe it used to be a textile factory.)

The location, the existing structures, and the presence of the state park all seem to add up to an idea which would be great for the capital area.

@Paul - heh - Aquasino.

The 2012 U Albany Master's Urban Planning Studio talked about this idea at length. We purposed the dilapidated refrigeration building near Corning Preserve be the site for a regional aquarium. The link below has powerpoints of the proposals for downtown, including the aquarium idea (on final powerpoint slides 93-98). Please take a look at at least these slides, it really is a well composed grand vision plan.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
