It looks like Mark Appel -- picked #1 overall in this year's MLB draft by the Houston Astros -- will be spending some time with the ValleyCats, starting in July. (the 'Cats are a short-season A affiliate for the Astros). Appel is a pitcher who returned for his senior year at Stanford after being picked in the top 10 last year -- he'll be expected to move through the minors relatively quickly. Opposing batters hit .203 against him this past college season, and he struck out 11 per 9 innings pitched. [Houston Chron] [SB Nation] [Stanford] (Thanks, @MasticatingMonkey)
