Alongside the octogon
Carl Strock, now writing for the Times Union's website, gets an up-close look at a cage fight at the Saratoga City Center this past weekend: "Ortiz came at him like a man on fire - pure rage - and chased him around the cage till he finally got him down, gained a superior position, and began to beat him in the head, which seemed to me the object of these fights." (Professional fights of this sort are still illegal in New York, but amateur events are not. As you know, of course, there's a push to legalize professional matches.) [via @rmadeo]

I am not so sure these fights are legal just becasue they are amateur. They must be sanctioned by the AAU or some other amateur body. Check with the State Athletic Commisision/ NYS Dept of State.
