The Albany Tunnel Company
Don Rittner drops a sentence that will make your inner local-history nerd spin: "Did you know there was a plan to build a tunnel under the [Hudson] river near Maiden Lane [in Albany]?" We were surprised by the date associated with the idea -- 1836. But after some poking around, it looks like the first tunnel (successfully) built under a navigable river was the Thames Tunnel in England, the construction for which started in 1825.
