albany barn fusion 2013 logo

Drawing's closed!

This Friday at the Washington Park Lakehouse a bunch of rising Capital Region chefs will be serving up a selection of fusion-inspired dishes -- along with music and art -- as part of Fusion, a benefit for the Albany Barn project. AOA has a pair of tickets to the event -- and we're giving them away. To enter, please answer this question in the comments:

The Albany Barn is re-imagining the former St. Joseph's Academy as live/work space for artists. What's something else in the Capital Region that could be re-imagined -- and as what?

It could be another building, sure. (The Central Warehouse could definitely use some re-imagining.) But it also could be an attitude or way of thinking about this place. There's no right answer. So be creative.

The lineup for Albany Barn Fusion event includes:

+ Brian Bowden, Executive Chef, Javier's
+ Chris Faraci, Executive Chef, Carmen's Cafe
+ Sarah Fish, Chef/Owner, The Hungry Fish Cafe
+ Marla Ortega, Executive Chef/Owner, Illium Cafe & Wine Bar
+ Michael Pallozzi, Executive Chef, Carney's Tavern
+ Zach Welton, Chef de Cuisine, New World Bistro Bar

As well as...

+ Signature cocktails featuring spirits by Albany Distilling Company
+ Craft beer by Druthers Brewing Company
+ Wine pairings by Empire Wine
+ Dessert & Coffee by Chocolate Gecko, The Cookie Factory & Starbucks
+ Performances & live installations served fresh by regional artists
+ Couture by Duchess
+ Music by deejays Space, Time, & Spacetime
+ Spectacular lighting displays by Nicky Lightz

The Fusion event is this Friday, October 18, at 7 pm 7:30 pm. Single tickets for the event are $60. "Catalyst" committee tickets are $125. And there's a catalyst couple ticket for $175.

Important: All comments must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 to be entered in the drawing. You must answer the question to be part of the drawing. I'd like to see the streets in Albany and beyond reimagined to have true, dedicated bike paths, and be more pedestrian friendly.

I would love for that building on the corner of 3rd and Broadway in Troy to be rehabbed and occupied by something good! I guess it was a Rite Aid before, but now... ?

Clean up the Hudson and re-imagine the waterfront with beaches and parks.

Too often we all (upstate and downstate peeps alike) lament at Albany's lackluster environment compared to that of the city. This is a point to celebrate! What we balk at as "lackluster" is our own independent center of culture, involvement, and business! And it's right under our noses, lets start treating it that way!

There's this huge church building in downtown Albany near the entrance to 787 (I tried to find it on Google Maps but am not able to do so). It has been empty and for sale for what seems like decades now. My mom and I have been wishing for years now that someone would buy it and transform it into something fabulous - a restaurant or gallery or SOMETHING.

Definitely re-imagine the streets as more biker friendly.

That old refrigerator building off Colonie Street definitely could use some re-imagining. It is such a large space, and such an eye soar! Albany could definitely benefit from some downtown rehab, Wolffs Biergarten and The Olde English Pub have done a great job so far, but that area is a great location and could use some help!

I would love to see more of the empty warehouse buildings in North Albany being re-imagined as condos and/or businesses.

Re-imagine the Harriman Campus back on the tax rolls with the removal of the double circle and implementation of traditional streets and neighborhood development.

I would reimagine the area in Rensselaer where they tore down the high school to be a boutique shopping area with local shops/businesses.

Lower State St in Schenectady needs some help...I'd love to see some more green space or parks in downtown Schenectady.

The Park Playhouse (in Albany's Washington Park), as a food market, every weekend.

A re-envisioned and revitalized Tivoli Nature Preserve could be a wonderful resource to Albany's Arbor Hill and West Hill neighborhoods.

Fuccillo commercials need to be re-imagined. Into better commercials.

I'd like to see the Empire State Plaza reimagined to be a more environmentally friendly place. There must be a huge amount of stormwater that runs off its almost 100 acres. I'm thinking rain gardens, green roofs, and the like. One small step - plant street trees along Swan street. It would help manage urban runoff and make the Plaza more city-friendly.

Dining in the Capital Region needs to be re-imagined. While we do have a handful of great spots, the area could use some refreshing new flavors and ideas. Hopefully these chefs get creative for the Fusion event and implement their ideas locally.

Parking in downtown Albany could be re-imagined -- designate lots of Free Parking Spots painted like the free parking spot in the Monopoly game to encourage more people to visit and shop.

I would love to re-imagine the 787 as having a solid public transit subway system - maybe above ground, Portland style, to go between Albany and Troy. Nightlife is such a big thing and it'd be awesome not to have to worry about safely and easily getting to and from these two area, especially now that Troy is coming up with so many awesome new spots!

Jay street in Schenectady has been seeking imagination for years. With local bars, restaurants and obviously Proctors increasing foot traffic jay st. needs a makeover to ensure local business like Bliss (custom antique and refurbishing) stay and new bushiness can grow ...awesome location for a Schenectady paint and sip with art classes!!!

The riverside!

Reimagine the closed firehouse(T2) on the south side of lower Clinton Ave into a museum of the fire service in the city of Albany. 150yrs of history waiting to be shared with visitors!!

Re-re-imagine Albany's Quintessence to be Quintessence again!

I'd like Elda's to be turned into a combo All Good Bakers/Cheese Traveler type market/cafe. Obvs AGB isn't a real option in any sense, but this is imaginary anyway and would be the coolest thing ever.

I would love to re-imagine the Hudson River on the Albany and Rensselaer side. 787 was a poor idea.

I would love to see some do something with the old refrigerator building visable from 787. It has a ton of potential, or it did until the fire, it could be a huge no kill shelter, or a business space or even converted to a lovable apartment style space. I mean at this point just to clean it up the could turn it into a storage place as long as it wasn't a huge abandoned part of the view line.

Re-Imagine the Madison as a small music venue

reimagine the attitude/inferiority complex that people have about this region. its all here, its just spread out and not necessarily easy to find.

@MO -- good suggestion. I'd like to support the Madison Theater as a local business, but their movies are often schlock. I wish they had a different niche because I haven't been there in years. Maybe some kind of creative partnership with Steamer #10 up the street? No reason why they couldn't form the basis of a cultural hub, with the Pine Hills branch of the Albany Public Library (that is now mounting small art exhibits) and St. Rose, which has some fine cultural offerings, as an Albany art zone.

Re-imagine the very poor placement of Trader Joe's in Colonie - to a much bigger location and parking lot.

Re-imagine downtown Troy with a live entertainment theatre and a movie theater.

I'd like to re imagine all of these ridiculous loft/condominium spaces in Saratoga into affordable housing.

Reimagine vacant buildings developed for affordable and accessible housing and the waterfront supressing 787

Reimagine the large abandoned building off the 787 as an artists playground, community, and children's museum.

Albany City School District

I'm sure someone else has already posted this, but the Capital Region desparately needs a public transit system ! Reimagine some of our highways into a great subway or rail system and this area would flourish even more!

I reimagine that huge cement building off of 787 as an indoor waterpark!

I agree the riverside needs to be reimagined.

Re-imagine the Irish Mist as a venue and space for creative and alternative nightlife. There was a glorious preview of this possibility in Dec 2011.

Transportation. A well placed east/west bike lane (possibly connecting the river to SUNY) would create a much safer and more enjoyable commute for most cyclists and motorists.

I would reimagine the washington park as a local brewery (far fetched I know) with lots of outdoor seating and local food- farmers market on the summer and fall weekends...how cool would that be?

I'd like to see the Albany Corning preserve cleaned up so that it could be a nice, safe, clean area to swim and play during the summer months. It could be reimagined as possibly the city beach!

how about the old buildings at peoples island state park? the park is a great resource, and the buildings could be restored into a museum, or even an aquarium!

Albany's First Friday more like TNO

If the Albany dump gets any bigger I can reimagine it as one of the High Peaks.

It would be awesome to have some clothing shops downtown!

I'd like to see some of the vacant office space in the Empire State Plaza be reimagined as residential space

Love to see the old observation deck in the Alfred E. Smith Building turned into a restaurant or a ballroom.

Re-imagine attitudes towards downstate New Yorkers

I can imagine the Townsend Park are a bit more hip with some more modern restaurants and evening music clubs, like jazz!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
