Thanksgiving is just a speed bump on the way to holiday shopping
The general manager of Crossgates tells the Times Union's Tim O'Brien that it looks like more than 30 retail stores at the mall will open on Thanksgiving this year -- a trend that is apparently playing out at other malls and shopping plazas around the area. [TU]

Disgusting.
Relax, have a nice meal, spend time with friends and family. The mall isn't going anywhere. It just gets worse every year.

I won't be satisfied until retailers crash my Thanksgiving dinner with exclusive deals only available in my dining room. "You know, I THOUGHT I was thankful, but now that you've presented me with these markdown prices, I think I am feeling true gratitude for the first time. Pass the cranberry please."

The stores may be open, but I won't be going there. I'll be with my family, giving thanks that my stint working in the retail industry (20+ years ago) was brief.

"All stores are not required to be open until the midnight opening promotion,"
How generous. Bloody hell.
I've been to Gourmet Chef the other day and the employees were discussing 8 PM Thanksgiving opening as well.
Who the heck needs this? This small store is not a destination...
Personally I only shop after 10 am on Black Friday.

I don't understand why people get alarmed at this kind of thing. Long before retail stores started being open on Thanksgiving, places like movie theaters and gas stations were, and nobody seemed to care about that. People feel bad for the cashier at the retail store, but not the person serving them popcorn at the concession stand?

You hear a lot about the "attack on Christmas" but nothing in the media about the attack on Thanksgiving. The fourth Thursday in November is our country's unique holiday, only celebrated here. That should be the day for people to stop, give thanks and reflect on the bounty we have. Instead we're standing on line, fighting to get stuff we probably don't need. It's so disheartening.
