Personhood status for chimps in New York?
Thought-provoking situation near Gloversville: An org called the The Nonhuman Rights Project has filed a writ of habeas corpus on behalf of a chimpanzee living in an enclosure there. The group wants to establish "legal personhood" for chimps, arguing the primate possess complex cognitive abilities that deserve some fundamental rights such as bodily integrity. They've filed a lawsuit on behalf of Tommy, the Gloversville chimp, and two other chimps in the state. Tommy's owner argues the chimp has a good life -- one that includes watching TV.
