The week ahead

war horse production photo

The touring company of War Horse is at Proctors this week.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look forward to, or keep busy with this week, from the weather (rainy), to Jules and Vincent, to War Horse, to classes and talks, to Wine & Dine for the Arts, to monster trucks, to music...

Weather

Here's the paraphrased forecast for this week:
Monday: Sunny, upper 40s.
Tuesday: Cloudy, snow and rain from overnight, mid 40s.
Wednesday: Maybe some snow and rain. 40.
Thursday: Sunny, low 30s.
Friday: Again, maybe a bit warmer.
Weekend: More sun, but in the 20s.

The recent warmth has been almost tropical compared to what it followed.

Pulp Fiction

Monday: The AFI 100 series at Proctors is showing Pulp Fiction in the GE Theater. Tarantino's modern classic is now 20 years old (it's true). 1:30 pm, 4:30 pm, 7:30 pm - $5

War Horse

Wednesday-Sunday: The touring company of the Broadway-hit play War Horse is at Proctors. Show blurbage:

As World War One begins, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

So how do you stage a play about a horse without an actual horse? A very complicated -- and remarkable -- puppet. Wednesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up

Classes and talks

Two cooking classes that could be interesting this week:

Pasta
Tuesday: Gio Culinary Studio has a hands-on class about making three types of handmade pasta. Tuesday 6:15 pm - $60

Budget challenge
Tuesday: Chef Ellie Markovitch will be at the Arts Center of the Capital Region for a class about "how to make delicious, nutritious, and affordable meals for your family" -- specifically, 7 meals for $40. Tuesday 6 pm - $50 (only a few spots remain)

And a history talk:

The Flood of 1913
Tuesday: The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center is presenting a talk/discussion about the Flood of 1913: "In late March 1913, a significant storm swept into the northeast and brought devastating floods. This talk will highlight how communities throughout the Capital District, especially those along the Hudson River like Albany, Troy, Watervliet, and Waterford, were affected." Tuesday 7 pm at McGreivey's in Waterford - $6 suggested donation

Comedy

Thursday: Sinbad will be at the Troy Music Hall for a stand-up show. Is there an 80s sitcom star comedy revival trend? Can Dave Coulier be far behind? Thursday 8 pm - $29 and up

Wine & Dine for the Arts

Thursday-Saturday: Wine & Dine for the Arts -- the Albany Chefs Food & Wine Festival -- returns with a range of events over the three days in downtown Albany. Among them: a cocktail party at City Hall, grand tastings, and competitions. Ticket prices vary by event, and some events are already sold out (or will be soon).

Monster Jam

Friday, Friday, Friday and Saturday, Saturday, Saturday: Monster Jam returns to the TU Center. Monster trucks, crushed cars, and "high-horsepower acrobatic chaos." Friday and Saturday 7:30 pm - $22 / $12 kids, and up

Music

Friday: Guy Davis at The Linda
Blues guitarist. 8 pm - $20

Friday: Jupiter String Quartet at Union College
"Exciting, young" quartet playing Haydn and Schubert. 8 pm - $25 / $10 students

Saturday: Wild Adriatic at The Hollow

Saturday: Sheesham & Lotus at Caffe Lena
Vaudeville-era blues and ragtime. (Free kids concert at 3 pm.) 8 pm - $16

Sunday: Swear and Shake at Helsinki Hudson

These are a just a few things for this week, not a comprehensive list. Know of something people should be looking forward to this week? Please share!

Tuesday, January 14 @ The Ale House (Troy)
Hosted by Abby Lublin
7:30 – 9:30 pm
680 River Street
Theme: “Music"

There are few things as universal as music appreciation. Ok, death. But unless we plan to have a big, ol' posthumous party, we have not experienced that firsthand. Ok, pooping. We've covered that.

But really, in the words of Prophet Bob Marley: "One good thing about music: when it hits, you feel no pain." How true, Bob, how true. Truthfully, there are many good things about music. Come share a tale of how music saved your life. Or how you make music. Or that song, y'know, that song that gets you every. friggin'. time. Or an example of what a certain kind of music does for you. Maybe you're a musician... when did you first know? Come share (or hear) the music of your life at the Ale House this Tuesday night.

Swear and Shake are great, and when I went to the Helsinki website for tickets I saw that Anthony da Costa will be opening. Score!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
