Billions and billions of mussels
There was an interesting article in NYT this week about State Museum emeritus biologist Daniel Molloy's work on a targeted, environmentally-safe control agent for zebra and quagga mussels, invasive species which have taken over the Hudson River and many other waterways. Molloy's research is really interesting and some of the mussel facts are mind boggling. Example: It took the invasive mussels just a year to go from zero to 500 billion in the stretch of river from Troy to West Point. [NYT]

Dan is a great scientist and a wonderful, surprisingly humble person. It's unfortunate that he, like some other top scientists, felt the need to leave the State Museum to be able to pursue his research. The bureaucracy of SED and DOB has made it almost impossible for Museum scientists to effectively utilize their grant money. The Board of Regents should be investigating the Brain Drain at the State Museum with the loss of top notch scientists in recent years.
