Washington Park Tulip Bulb Sale 2014

washington park abu hassan tulipsThe annual -- and popular -- Washington Park Tulip Bulb Sale has been moved back a week, to Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25. The long winter and cool spring apparently have the tulips taking their time this year -- many are still blooming and not yet ready to be pulled from the ground.

If want your pick of the tulips, the day to go is the dig-your-own day on Saturday. Details post jump.

From the Washington Park Conservancy:

The annual Washington Park Tulip Bulb Sale, originally scheduled for May 17 & 18, has been postponed until the following weekend. Due to the long winter many of the tulips are still in bloom and can still be enjoyed.
The sale will now take place on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25 at 9:00 a.m. to benefit the Washington Park Conservancy.
On Saturday, gardeners get first crack at the tulips they want by digging their own bulbs from select beds around the Moses Fountain. For every bag participants fill for themselves, we request they fill one for the Sunday sale.
On Sunday, the bags of dug-up tulip bulbs will be sold at the Washington Park Lakehouse.
The cost each day is $5 for a bag of 20 bulbs, or $20 for 5 bags.

But they are already spent. I don't think they will make nice blooms next year.

Lu, some will bloom right away again next year and others will take a year or two to regain strength. I've got quite a few tulips from a past tulip fest in my garden, and they are putting on a nice show this year.

The sale is over at noon today (Sunday) I was there at 1245 staring at bags of tulips with no one to buy them from! I cried alittle...
