Nitty Gritty
Tuesday: The Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam has its Grand Slam lined up at The Low Beat -- eight poets will be completing to represent Nitty Gritty at various events. Tuesday open mic at 7:30 pm / slam at 8 pm - $5 / $3 students

Pulp Fiction

Monday: The classic film series at the Palace is showing Pulp Fiction, which is now 20 years old. Monday 7 pm - $5

The God Game

Tuesday-Sunday: This is the last week for The God Game at Capital Rep. The new play, written by Suzanne Bradbeer, is about the role of religion in politics and the private lives of politicians. It's gotten strong reviews. Tuesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up

Arts and sciences

The Amygdala and the Stethoscope
Wednesday: Doctor and author Danielle Ofri will be at Union for a talk titled "The Amygdala and the Stethoscope: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine." Wednesday 7 pm, Reamer Campus Center Auditorium - free

Fine Points
Wednesday-Thursday: The Fort Orange Garden Club will have a flower show at the Albany Institute. Blurbage: "[A] two day event demonstrating the area's finest talents in horticulture, floral design, conservation and educations exhibits and botanical arts." Wednesday 3-5 pm, Thursday 10 am-8 pm - free admission

Clarity in complexity
Friday: This year's RPI commencement colloquy includes worldwide web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, pioneering genetics research Mary-Claire King (there's a movie her work this year), and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty. The discussion topic: "Creating Clarity in Complexity to Enable Transformational Change." Friday 3:30 pm, EMPAC - free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required

A few cooking classes this week:

Dog treats
Monday: Christine Kleinegger will be at Honest Weight to lead a class about making "your own natural dog biscuits with wholesome ingredients that you can customize for your own pet's preferences and nutritional needs." Monday 6 pm - free, registration required

Five ingredients
Wednesday: Chef Sarah Fish will be at Different Drummer's Kitchen leading a class about how to use "five ingredients to make five delicious dishes from scratch": caramelized onions, apples, sausage, potatoes, and ricotta. Wednesday 6 pm - $55

Empanadas
Thursday: Chef Julianna Glassanos will be at the Arts Center to lead a class about making empanadas. "In this class we will learn how to make various authentic and delicious savory and even sweet empanadas. Some of the ones we will make include a Manchego cheese and guava empanada, and a Chilean hearty empanada." Thursday 6 pm - $55

Cast iron
Friday: Deanna Fox will be at Different Drummer's Kitchen to lead a class about cast iron cooking: skillet potatoes, caramelized onions, corn bread, skillet seared steak, fruit cobbler, and tarte tatin. Friday 6 pm - $65

1. We're in that sort of lull just before the summer starts. So now's a good time to square away summer plans -- trips, wish lists, just stuff you want to do.
