ShopRite ESP?

ShopRite is looking at the possibility of opening a grocery store on the concourse of the Empire State Plaza, the Gazette's Bethany Bump reports. [Daily Gazette]

Yes! Any downtown grocery store is a start. Do it. And once they start making a bunch of money, open a real full service grocery store downtown. Albany needs this. Do it. The location of the "Albany" Trader Joe's is ridiculous and the parking is impossible. Put a store like that in North Albany and it would thrive. Plenty of parking, easy access to the main highways and you can go get a beer or cider at one of the many great establishments in the area to reward yourself for getting the shopping done. Do it.

DO IT.

Ugh. Shoprite is the worst.

While this sounds great in theory, my guess is it would never be open past 5pm, maybe not even on weekends... making it fine for state workers but worthless to the neighborhood. Prove me wrong, Shop Rite!

That would be great if they did! Of course, only if it was actually open after state worker hours... unlike everything else in the concourse.

I've lived in Albany for 4 years and haven't been up the Corning Tower, nor had Capital Q (not including a takeout order), nor enjoyed the various food trucks and farmers' markets.

11,000 state workers will make some money but it'd be nice for the people who might live in Albany to utilize services after hours or on weekends.

I second Justin's sentiment- this is a small step in the right direction!

Here, here! Albany’s grocery store problem is not that we have too many… It’s that we just have too many in the wrong locations.

I very much want to see a market located in downtown Albany to complement the strong revitilization efforts going on. I wish it had been a Trader Joe's. But whatever store opens, downtown residents deserve the best in quality and affordable prices.

Jeff D, I agree with you on the annoying state-worker-focus of most downtown businesses and services like the Corning Tower and Capitol tours... BUT... don't deprive yourself of Capital Q. Get yourself to Ontario St! They are open late :)

Not enough people live downtown to support a full service grocery store.
