GMO apple
The company that created the "Arctic Apple," the genetically-modified apple variety that's said to resist browning, has been field testing the variety on trees in an undisclosed New York State location -- which the New York Apple Association and some local growers are uneasy about. No need for frankenfruit. Sprinkling a sliced apple with lemon juice will also prevent and apple from going brown.

Proponents of GE foods keep on saying that transgenic crops have the potential to solve the world's big problems. But instead of perennial wheat or drought resistant corn, we get soy that doesn't die when sprayed with powerful herbicides and apples that stay remarkably white after they are sliced.
Opponents of the technology can point to these new apples as exercise in overkill.
For what it's worth, you don't even need genetic engineering for perennial grains, only good old fashined cross breeding: http://goo.gl/6AxhnD

I don't grow apples but will make an exception for this one. Can't wait to plant one in my orchard.
