Rosh Hashanah

Wednesday: Rosh Hashanah -- the Jewish new year and the start of the High Holidays -- starts at sunset and continues until sundown on Friday. The High Holy Days conclude next week with Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year on the Jewish calendar, which starts at sunset on October 3.

A traditional Rosh Hashanah greeting or message is to wish someone a good year.

Monday: The Palace will be showing Dead Poets Society as a tribute to Robin Williams. Monday 7 pm - $5 / $3 kids

In translation
Tuesday: Edith Grossman -- acclaimed translator of the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa as well as Don Quixote -- will be at UAlbany as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Grossman will be reading from, and talking about, her new translation of works by Sister Juana Inés de la Cruz, the "Mother of Mexican Literature." Tuesday 8 pm, uptown campus, Assembly Hall - free

Contemporary architecture
Wednesday: Architect Angelo Bucci will be at EMPAC to talk about his recent projects as part of the RPI School of Architecture's lecture series. Here's a Pinterest board of his firm's work. Wednesday 6 pm - free and open to the public

Con Job
Thursday: There's a screening of Con Job: Stories of Adjunct and Contingent Labor at Honest Weight, with a Q&A afterward. The documentary was produced by two Saint Rose professors, and includes many adjunct professors from the Capital Region. (Earlier: Work Week: Con Job.) Thursday 7 pm - free

James Howard Kunstler
Friday: Author/cultural critic James Howard Kunstler will be at the Northshire Bookstore Saratoga to talk about his new A History of the Future, the third book in his World Made By Hand series. Friday 7 pm - free

Gregory Maguire
Saturday: Gregory Maguire -- Wicked author and Albany native -- will be at the Northshire Bookstore Saratoga to talk about his new book Egg and Spoon. Saturday 6 pm - free

Kirsten Gillibrand
Saturday: Kirsten Gillibrand will be at UAlbany to talk about her new memoir, Off the Sidelines, as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Saturday 4 pm, uptown campus, Campus Center Ballroom - $27 (includes the book), available from the Book House and Market Block

Tuesday: Gluten-free baking expert Elizabeth Barbone will be heading up a class at Price Chopper's Market Bistro. On the slate: rustic apple pie, molasses cookies, spicy pumpkin bread/layered trifle/grilled with pear compote. (You might recognize Barbone from her many appearances over at Serious Eats.)
